NCCC Maple 2 honors heroes on 9/11; help with house, garden

David, Dani and Katie celebrate with volunteers the completion of the community garden. By David Chernyshov Maple 2 participated and helped plan a Day of Remembrance and Service on September 11. The day was meant to honor the people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and also the men and women who are serving America today. The team prepared for this event by handing out flyers door-to-door throughout the community and chatting with local citizens about the upcoming event.

Kenzie Woltemath begins classes at Concordia University

Kenzie Woltemath of Atkins recently began classes at Concordia University, Nebraska in Seward, Neb. Kenzie is one of 286 members of the incoming freshman class, which hails from 30 states and five countries. This fall marks Concordia's 120th academic year. Concordia University, Nebraska, founded in 1894, is a fully accredited, coeducational university located in Seward, Neb.

AmeriCorps NCCC Oak 3 Team Heads Back to Camp at Sherman Lake YMCA

Remember the campfires, songs, games, stories and great outdoor activities? It was a life changing experience for those who were able to go in elementary or middle school. For the members of Oak 3 who have attended camp before, they get to relive the experience. For those who haven’t, they finally get that chance! Oak 3 is working at Sherman Lake YMCA Outdoor Center as camp counselors, participating in the fall integrated education program for the next three weeks.

Brittanee Roland, from Baltimore, Ma., is a member of Maple 4 in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start her 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 4 is made up of nine people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

Katie Hawn, from San Jose, Calif., is the team leader for Spruce 1 in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps’ Class 20. She arrived in Vinton on July 22, 2013, to start her 11-month service term leading a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Spruce 1 is made up of nine people from across the country and they will serve together on emergency management and long-term recovery projects with FEMA.

NCCC Cedar 2 serves Red Cliff Community Garden

By Ilexis Elba AmeriCorps NCCC team Cedar 2 is stationed in Red Cliff, Wis. assisting with a community garden on the Ojibwe Indian reservation. The garden has been established for several years, but still does not reach the whole community and can use further development. This sounds like a job for a fully qualified group of six individuals.

NCCC's Maple 5: A Courageous Camp

The team is serving as camp counselors for children and adults with disabilities who attend the camp during the summer and fall.   The team starts off every week with a new group of campers, as well as a new set of counselors to work side by side with.
